Indie Crush of the Week: Introducing SAZ

The decision this week to make SAZ our Indie Crush of the Week was something of an easy one – considering firstly, they made pretty great  indie-influenced tracks, and secondly, they’re both models…

Hailing from North London SAZ have just dropped their EP Dread Full with reports of a full length album already in the works. The opening vocals of their track, Seven Deadly Sins, almost reminds us of  Dev Hynes’ Lightspeed Champion – with its dark, melancholic quality. However, this reminiscence of early 2000s indie lasts for all of 10 seconds before the entrance of the trap beat takes right into the present day.

Their genre hopping is fascinating – on top of their heavy drum machine tracks, SAZ layer melodic, delay-effected guitars which can’t help but recall Foals’ more recent catalogue. And as with a lot of rappers at the moment – they walk the fine line between talking and singing with remarkable skill.

Its artists such as SAZ that force us here at Indie Crush to broaden our horizons from time to time and recognise the amazing, innovative talent of our current generation of young musicians. SAZ have that vast, cinematic quality of songwriting that recalls the brilliance of Frank Ocean’s output – and perhaps in a few years they could be making an album to rival his legacy…
