Indie Crush of the Week: Amethysts

Who: Amethysts

Hometown: East Anglia

Line-up: Clarice and Simon

What’s all the fuss about?

It’s fair to say that last year was something of a launchpad for Amethysts. The electronic pair saw their singles skyrocket to six-figure plays on streaming platforms, subsequently earning them significant airplay from a spate of the music industry’s bigwigs. Chuck in a handful of major live performances (Secret Garden Party, Sofar Sounds anyone?) and you’ll have the long and short of just how impressive their 2017 was. Now, with new single ‘Be There’ on repeat spins in our office, Amethysts look set to continue on the same upward trajectory this year.

Why we’re crushing hard.

If there’s one thing you should know about Amethysts, it’s this: once they lure you into their lush, ambient-pop soundscapes, there’s no escape. With each stunning release, the East Anglian duo have been perfecting their mesmeric formula and latest single ‘Be There’ might be their most heady mixture yet. Clarice and Simon’s serpentine vocals weave in and out of dark-hued, glittering sound beds before giving way to a chorus that showcases their pop-sensibilities. With the depth of their songwriting and the glossy production, you’d be forgiven for thinking their sound is a product of some expensive producer a million miles away, but you’d be wrong. The pair write, record and co-produce all of their music in their rural studio in the idyllic eastern countryside (Bon Iver, eat your heart out). Amethysts’ DIY attitude is all part of their charm and demonstrates the pair’s capability to reach dizzying heights off their own back. It just goes to show, two really is a magic number.
